Once upon a time, there was a demon named Muran who disturbed the yajna of the sage Narada. Narada cursed Muran that he would be born as a human and suffer the cycle of birth and death. Muran was born as a Brahmin named Daksa.

 

Daksa performed a great yajna, inviting all the gods and goddesses except Lord Shiva and Parvati. When they knew of this, Shiva and Parvati came to the yajna uninvited. Daksa was very angry and insulted Shiva.

 

In retaliation, Shiva plucked out one of Daksa's eyes. Parvati calmed Shiva down and asked him to restore Daksa's eye. Shiva agreed but said that Daksa would always be imperfect, as he would have only one eye.

 

Daksa realized his mistake and begged for forgiveness. Shiva and Parvati blessed him and gave him a boon that anyone who observed a fast on Ekadashi would be freed from the cycle of birth and death.

 

Since then, Hindus have been observing the Ekadashi fast, praying to Lord Vishnu for liberation from the cycle of birth and death.
